I think this part needs some more material.
I am happy to have a second remote with me ![]()
I recently had 10 days of testing GPS follow me in Croatia.
Each day I coded at night and tested at day time…
I started based on the amazing @monter_man GPS follow me implementation.
My goal was to test everything on the water and adapt it to my needs/wishes.
Code quality was not priority since time at night was short.
After all I got my perfect setup and had some of the best sessions of my life!!
Riding a tow boogie with GPS following is AMAZING!!
I found the original implementation a bit to complex. It was hard for me dealing with it on the water.
I sum up my final changes:
-) FM mode only (no seperataed RTM)
-) simplified state machine:
FM_IDLE FM is off
FM_ARMED FM is enabled, foiler on tow line. Select FM mode. Normal full manual control.
FM_ACTIVE Separation is proven (> engage distance). FM controls steering depending on chosen mode.
FM_RETURN Rider is not moving → return toward a stationary rider. Normal completion returns to FM_ARMED with separation proof cleared.
FM_STOPPING A major fault
-) simplified engaging (> engage distance, trigger-independent) and stopping (rider not moving)
-) security cap motor on < min distance. does not stop FM session
-) user can always override steering without stopping the FM session
-) GPS heading always wins if different to compass
-) FM modes for behind (left, middle, right; F1-F3) and front (left, middle, right; F4-F6)
I like to have the boogie in front of me when chasing open swell.
This way I see when something happens to the boogie. I don’t want to loose the boogie in the ocean… Works great!
For clean waves, boot waves, etc. behind modes are perfect.
-) some bug fixes
-) warning distance (-> remote periodically vibrates) + max. distance (long vibration + FM_STOPPING)
-) reduced steering on high throttle
-) steering is now power neutral (resulting pull force stays the same)
-) Trigger released does not stop FM session

See the branch “fm-only-water-tested”:
Hardware uses M100-5883 on rx and M100 mini on tx.
Signal quality is amazing! I never thougt that the position while moving can be that accuracte.
water tested bremote binaries for rx and tx
config rx and tx.
Short video in action of follow me behind (F2). I still have no waterproof camera.
Thanks to @ludwig_bre, @monter_man and my wife for her limited vacation time.
A tow boogie going with you is next level foiling!!!
BTW, we could do some bremote coding vacation get-together… ![]()
Amazing.
So this is actually usable now?
If this had come a few days earlier, I would have prepared to try it the next few weeks on my trip to Brittany.
Guess I will work on it, once I am back.
Yes, I had several great sessions with it and pushed my tow boogie on big swell to its limit.
Code is not beautiful and probably not mergeable 1 to 1.
But use cases and usability is the way to go for me.
Excellent news. So is it the M100-5883 on rx and M100 mini that you recommend. I have the BN 220 currently but have not yet built my remote. I’ve had a non GPS model working great for a while but have all parts ready to go for GPS and will order those parts if that is the way forward. Thanks
I have no experience with the BN 220 so I can’t compare. I was just amazed how good position data from M100-5883 and M100 mini is. If you buy new I see no reason to go with the old BN220…
M100-5883, what’s the advantage?
Just compass?
GPS is identical to the m10 mini afaik.
Yes, I think it’s the same. I used the m100-5853 in the rx. You never know where the journey goes…
Just make sure the chip inside is M100 not the new B101 as it’s no good, is does not talk well with the RX.
