Flightjunkie's first e-foil build

Thanks

you use a antispark with your vesc 75300?

yes saw a lot of burned liftfoil esc too…don`t know what is main problem there but for that price this should not happen… maybe cooling lines get stuck in long term usage? Looks like problems arise not at the beginning…Anyone know which MGM ESC exactly they use?

Yes. I’m using one AS150 connector to power on.

If I had to bet, I would say something like a modified version of the TMM 14063-3. They are using a 14S battery with a 5.5 kw capable motor, meaning up to 94A peak, but let’s take some margin, 140A continuous seems good. I bet they limited the motor current to 100A just to be sure.

If you run 94A battery, motor current has to go up to ~135A (peak vs RMS).

Also how do you get from 5.5kW to 94A?
I guess they can run 5.5kW the whole battery. So when battery is empty e.g. cell 3.0V you go up to 130A battery and ~185A motor to get that 5.5kW.

Fresh 14S battery pack gives me 58.8V, just did 5500/58.8 to get the (battery) current.

The battery might handle it but not the motor, it will overheat or burn, I am pretty sure about it.

If you run 94A battery, motor current has to go up to ~135A

How that? I assume that 94A battery current is at 100% dutycycle. Then the phase current is also 94A.

Can you explain?
Do you have one?
It is pretty easy to test, just put a tempsensor on the motor and set the limits to 200A, or even 300A then let the ESC temp regulate the current.
You will see quite quickly what the motor really handles.

For normal RC - BLDC commutation (like Flier ESC, Seakings or SEAL) you are right.
But for all “real” motor drivers:
RMS != peak.
Settings are always peak. For three phase motor you have to take into account the power factor (Blindleistung) and the sinus curve.

I don’t but I am developping my own motor. We ran some simulations before chosing our final design. FR’s motor won’t be able to handle 5.5kW for long.
I already said it on other threads, there is a correlation between motor dimension and max power. That’s also why I doubt the Flipsky / Maytech motor will handle 12kw.

That’s true, and that’s what I am planning to do for mine

What is the name of the antispark?

AS150

Thank you :slight_smile

I’ve done about a dozen days of riding. The board is working really good. I am now working on my second board and testing and tuning various aspects of my setup. Everything packs in two bags and a back pack (battery in back pack, a board bag, and the second bag holds everything else, foil, drive unit, remote, ESC and all), so I can make one trip from the car to the water. I’m trying to simplify everything to make the process of taking the board out as easy as possible. Currently I’d say it’s easier then taking a jetski out, but more work then going kite surfing.

If you have a roof rack, strap it on top of your car fully assembled! I never disassemble mine! It can be a little more challenging to carry but it is much more convenient when you go out! Also, you might have less anxiety about messing up the assembly and have something leaking!

Time to get a van or estate. My setup time is just getting dressed and plugging in the battery…

Hi.

I like to take the board out in various different secluded spots. I’m fortunate enough to live in Hawaii so there are lots of great places to ride. But, due to the large number of tourists and locals at the beach I often find myself parking and walking to good spots. I can ride my onewheel from the car to the beach with the 80lbs of e-foil on me in one trip!

This was one ride. 15 miles total GPS distance. 1h20min.

Oh man that’s a beautiful water you got there. Lucky you

Have you tested your max speed with your new board ?
