It is kind of spendy, and given Flipsky’s track record with the VX3 I am hesitant to spend that much on a remote from them. But they do boast a “newly designed waterproof structure” so maybe it will be better

I wonder if this new model uses the same receiver as the VX3. Photos seem to show they might be.

Would be nice to just pair the new one and go.

That is arguably the best looking efoil remote to hit the market!
The rounded corners make it look nice and sleek and it looks like it has great functionality. Pricewise when you compare it to the Lift premium remote its cheap-as-chips. The biggest thing is do you need all that if you are only running an assist style foil setup. I feel the market has change quite considerably in the last 2 years…

Although, having the extra buttons might allow for some customisation in the software which would be amazing!

It is looking great.

But for a foil assist setup I absolutely cannot see the ergonomics work.
On first glance it looks extremely hard to push on your board while still holding/controlling the remote.

The roundish part on the top sticks out everywhere.

Tow boogie is the smallest minority so it doesn’t make sense for them. In adition they could just reprogram 2 buttons to take care of that like Zerotow did with the manta remote.

I have never ever pushed a remote down onto the board to stand up. Its just bad technique. However with a launch control activated from one of the extra buttons would mean you could just go completely hands free.

I did not know there is a “right” way to do it.
How is one supposed to do it?

But I am actually also not pushing on the remote.
For a quick takeoff in front of a wave, I need both hands.
I hold the remote in the right hand with my thumb and fingers, while pushing down on my palm.
With the upper part sticking out so much, this seems much harder with this design.

But if there is a better way, I am all ears.

Regarding “launch control”, none of their current remotes are in any way customizable (beyond stock features)
What makes you think, you will be able to add that feature?

Its not that there’s a right way, its just that there are better techniques that decrease the risk of accidental trigger pulls and also improve success

I hold the remote with all fingers, but push on either the right side or palm. If I’m not rushed I’ll generally engage the cruise control at ±60% which is enough to get up. If I fall the remote is held underwater so that the signal cuts while I disengage the cruise control.

This remote has an updateable firmware and a lot more buttons. This means the ability to program.
Foil Drive is launching a new remote with some extra features and they already use Flipsky Vesc’s so in a complete speculation, maybe this is whats coming considering timings…

This sounds to be pretty much the same way I do it.
Obviously I have not tried it yet, but I would assume the marked part in the picture would press on the board, when doing it that way,.

I do not need any of the new features the remote has (beyond being more waterproof), so I will not be one of the firsts to find out 😉

I have a Lift setup which is bulky as &%£# and the Lift remote is the most uncomfortable ever (the trigger is horrid and you get hand fatigue). But I don’t push it on the board when I get up.
I’ll send flipsky an email to ask if there’s a way I can run a custom firmware.

They talk about tank turn and there is this info on their website, so dual motor tow boogie setup may be possible ?

The wiring diagram is identical to the VX3.

I am sure it can be done.
Only question is, will they do it. 😉

Hard to see how anyone still considers buying Flipsky remotes.
My “Pro” version just randomly died on me too.

The new one is the first one that seems to be properly designed with a real waterproof enclosere. We will see over time how the quality is.

Well, for example, I want to buy one. I like the angle of the handle and the placement of the trigger, while most remotes have the ergonomics of a dildo. It’s easy to make an overhead trigger guard, and if the tank turn works for a tow boogie, then this remote will suit me in terms of functionality.

Well when you take into account the number of failed Maytech, Lift, Flite and Waydoo remotes I dont think it really matters. The mere nature of foiling and efoiling pushes gear right to to the limits. I took my very first Maytech V1 apart and coated it and waterproofed it properly. Its still my number 1 remote.

I will probably buy one eventually since it just looks nice, but I still have two functioning VX3s and a Bremote to build.

Not much detail in this manual about steering for a tow boogie, but there is a mention of it. I didn’t see any other details about how steering would work. Has anyone asked Flipsky directly about it?

I jumped in and bought one. First impressions after a week are very positive.
Huge increase over the VX3 in the number of parameters that be altered to riders preference.

Biggest improvements over VX3 are

Solid attachment points for lanyard
Floats and is actually “waterproof”
Grip area and shape fits my hand better, will be much better when wearing thick neoprene gloves
Trigger action is smoother and longer stroke

EDIT - The remote vibrates when it senses a low V on the battery in the board. Not much in manual about when it kicks in but while riding the remote pulsed and then stopped after a little while and then did it again and continued that behaviour until I ended the session. My battery was still above the limit I have set in VESC to reduce power but it was getting close. Nice non visual clue to head to shore. END EDIT

I found that although screen size is larger than Vx3 some of the layout isn’t to my liking. There is a new version of firmware that might address some of my issues. Flipsky has updated their VX5 product page with both the initial and “simplified” layouts is you wish to look.

I played around with the “gear” option and I can see how that would be quite useful for someone that isn’t already used to the VX3. I found that for me I had to set the gear in either the highest number of the next down to provide me with the trigger response I’m accustomed to with VX3. I also have arthritis in my hands so wasn’t able to easily change gears with my thumb that holds the remote so found I was using both hands to manage the remote - not likely an issue for people that are more “nimble” than me😀

Another very interesting feature that I haven’t really delved into is what is referred to as “Driving Record”. Double tap power button to start recording and same to close record. Multiple records can be stored on remote and reviewed on its screen.

Something I’m not overly impressed with is the magnetic charging cable - connection.
USB A on one end and a proprietary magnetic connector on the other end. Not easily replaceable (at least where I live). This is also the cable you need to upgrade firmware so be careful you don’t lose or damage it😀
