Foil Assist Build

Ok, I got the flipsky folding prop(2 actually) and it is for sure aluminum for $40. It is machined, not cast, and appears to be identical to their previous plastic one except for a few very minor changes. The captive nut is a size smaller, other than that I can’t see any difference. They probably could have made the foil section smaller but they didn’t. I’ll probably take it for a ride today and see how it does.

Talking about it being molded, I was basing that on their page. But if you say it’s machined, that’s great!
I’m eager to hear if it has any issues, like vibrations, and whether you get longer run time…

Maybe they meant that only the hub is molded…

You can also test it in the air by holding the mount and running the motor. When I tried this with their plastic prop, I noticed two circles in the air instead of one.

Took it for a ride and I can’t tell the difference between the plastic and this one. I see machining lines along the blades, so I’m pretty sure it’s not molded, although, perhaps those are machining lines from the mold? That would be pretty sloppy to go through the effort of making a mold and then not polishing out the machining lines.

Anyway, seems to work great, balance seems good.

My friend and I have been puzzled about why we get only a 25-minute, 4–6 km run compared to Foil Drive users achieving 45 minutes and 16 km. (Despite having larger battery 12s3p)
We suspect the difference might be due to the aluminum prop or its design.

If you manage to achieve better run times, it could be evidence that the aluminum prop plays a significant role.

The good foil drive users are barely using the motor. They pump loads and really only use it as an assist.

Any idea what capacity they’re using? I’m only running two 6s 5 ah, and I probably get around 20 minutes of actual running. Up on foil I need around 700 watts, and to get out of the water I need 1300. That all checks out, 45V5 amps1 hr = 225 wh, so 700 watts for 20 minutes is reasonable for my setup.

I moved the motor up a couple inches and it’s a lot easier to control.

Well the max battery is 11s3p so 12.6 Ah. Their prop is also very efficient as its lower pitch than the printed props a lot of guys use here. I would say some of the good riders probably only use 500W once up and around 1.2kwh to get up. Realistically so much depends on technique and what gear people use etc…
