New version of the app just released—with some great improvements for dock starts on Apple Watch. I’ve also levelled up my pumping game a bit. 🙂

Got some pretty cool shots from my new drone earlier this week of a tip breach. After a few years of foiling, it still baffles me how differently various foils handle breaching.

It’s a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. The follow mode is much improved compared to my old DJI Air 2, and the image quality is on a whole new level. That said, I’ve already managed to splash one Mavic 4 Pro into the lake—it backed into an overhanging tree branch while trying to follow me from a slightly longer distance. I can highly recommend the DJI Care Refresh plans…

**New release of the Foil Sessions app!**

This update brings a few new features — your heart rate now appears alongside your speed in the timeline. I’ve also upgraded the position indicator to an arrow showing your current direction, and added wake thieving as a new discipline.

**Improved parawing up/downwind support**

Latest version of the app comes with some pretty nice updates for parawing and downwinders. A new algorithm analyzes your session and picks out downwind runs (and upwind if you’re on a parawing). A run is counted as a consecutive swell foiled for at least 100 m. On the watch you’ll now see stats for your latest run — distance, duration, and average speed. Back on the couch, phone in hand, you can step through the runs in detail. There’s also a summary view that shows overall downwind stats and lists all your runs to scroll through.

Plenty of other goodies in this release too. One of my favorites is the replay feature — hit play and watch your track animate across the map, complete with speed and heart rate graphs. The prone surf algorithm also got an almost total rewrite and should behave much better now (thanks steve!). Oh, and swell rides are also detected in towed jet ski sessions.

Been a few releases since the last post, and plenty of improvements along the way. Dropped a new one yesterday with a simple navigation aid to help you find that exit on the horizon when downwinding. Should of course always be used together with a backup navigation aid.

New release passed review just in time for the weekend. Added search for those with tons of sessions, and for the downwinders, cross-track error is now in the destination view. Should make finding your way on those long offshore runs a bit easier.

Just released a new version of the app with proper iPad support. It’s really nice to review your sessions on that big screen.

For downwinders I also added voice callouts for those of you using waterproof headphones. It will tell you distance to go, your heading and how far you’ve drifted off course. Configurable every 3, 5 or 10 minutes. Also works if you record on your iPhone so no need for an Apple Watch for this.

New version just dropped. The big thing this time is full GPX import and export. You can now switch over to Foil Sessions from pretty much any tracking app that can spit out a GPX file and keep all those nice sessions you’ve recorded. You could also go the other way, although I’m not sure why you’d want to. 😅

It also opens the door for posting your tracks to online leaderboards. And for all the Garmin folks: you can now pull your sessions into Foil Sessions and actually analyze them in a foiling-focused app. I love my Garmin watch, but their app isn’t exactly built with foilers in mind.

The latest release of foil sessions adds sharing to instagram, facebook, messages, and more. You can move, resize, and even rotate the track. If you don’t like the default title, you can edit that too.

I’m already working on the next release with weather support and customizable track colors. Turns out the blue I picked doesn’t work on all satellite images. Who knew.

Hi @jenz I see you’ve got a beta for Garmin and Android, I’m excited about this. I need to upgrade my watch to use the app and really like the Garmin Instinct range, can you confirm that it’s only the Instinct 3 AMOLED versions that will supported? This is what’s is suggested in Garmin Connect IQ app? many thanks.

The beta is garmin only for now. You can use it without the ios companion app, but you’ll miss out on a lot of features. I’ll probably build an android version for next season, but that’s at least six months out.

The amoled version of the instinct 3 is the only instinct that supports the full app. It looks tough, but the buttons often stop working after enough salt water gets into them. If you want a more bulletproof garmin for foiling, I’d look at the fenix 8 or fenix 9 instead. Now that the fenix 9 is out, you can probably find a used 8 for a good price.
