Does anyone have recommendations for potting compound for batteries? I need to totally encapsulate the battery pack inside a 3d printed housing. After much searching, all that happened was I got more worried about making the correct choice 😂 I believe I should be looking for something that has low exotherm since some areas have a lot of empty space and the compound should not be totally rigid to allow for dimensional changes due to cells heating during use.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had much the same ‘paralysis by analysis’ going on for potting battery packs. Locally available options in Australia were incredibly expensive. Finally took a gamble on these guys on Alibaba. Haven’t received the product but they have been super responsive and excellent to deal with.

Could be worth redesigning the 3D printed case to minimize the wasted space, contour around the battery cells etc. I’m going 3d print a case and design it so that I can glue in a whole face of aluminium top and bottom of the pack to improve heat transfer. if you don’t want to redesign the case possibly look at filling in the empty space with foam or hollow printed shapes to reduce weight and cost of the thermal transfer material.

Total cost was around $200 aud including PayPal currency fees, freight (most of the cost) and import costs. I’ll report back when I receive and use but hopefully it does a good job!
