1st Efoil Build

My Buddy is into surfing and wanted an efoil, so I figured that I’d build him one since I build electric skateboards and the components are similar.

My Buddy bought the board, mast and foil used for a steal. Sorry I do not have a ton of details off hand.

-foil board

  • gong v1 mast (I think)
  • gong wing
  • flipsky 65161 120kv
  • flite propeller
  • makerx g300 vesc
  • Bluetooth module for connecting to vesctool phone app
  • vx5 remote
  • 12s6p molicel p42a pack designed and built by me. This is actually an esk8 battery I tossed in for him while I finish the pack I’m designing for him.

(14s8p reliance rs-50 pack)

Slapped together a small CNC machine to cut some carbon fiber and aluminum parts for it. I needed to make an adapter plate from the foil to the mast.

Also I modeled, printed a mold and cast a silicone gasket for the mast to board connection so that the mast can be easily removed but also still water tight. I am going to use Anderson pp75 connectors on the phase wires for a quick disconnect.

Big shoutout to jkoljo for the motor mount for the V1 mast. You are a legend and it’s a great model. I printed it out in GF-PET for high heat resistance and stiffness. I cnc’ed the washer out of 2mm cf plate, will be shooting you some coffee funds for that design.

I still have a bunch of things to button up and in the battery compartment like cable management and waterproofing of some components. But me and my buddy took it out for the maiden voyage the other day and it worked flawlessly.

Hit it with the 12 charger and got it topped off in about 2 hours and took it back out for another session.

Sorry did not take great pics along the way. I’ll try to throw some more up if I find them

Details on the battery/esk8 build that I pulled in for temporary use

Still need to dial in some vesc settings. Running 180 motor amps, 250A absolute max and I think 200 battery amps

Looks good, I just woder why you removed the shrink of the RS50 cells?

Cool project. Id just make sure the battery is in the center of the board, will be nicer to ride.

Because in addition to the cell holders I am adding adhesive between the cells. Removing the wraps gets the best adhesion and produces the most solid pack.

Probably way overkill for efoil. Because they definitely don’t experience as much vibration as esk8.

Yup, battery was mounted in the center for the first ride. Still working on a more permanent mounting system that allows me to remove the battery quickly but hold in place when riding.

Nice work! Good to see a GetFoil board being rehabilitated. Hopefully that G300 stays cool, I think the vx5 should let you (or your friend) keep an eye on temperature. Could consider an aluminum plate underneath if it gets hot on a long ride.

Yes definitely will consider mounting to a big heat sink with thermal paste. Honestly I thought the g300 would be overpowered and not heat up that much. But last time he had it out, it was toastier than I thought it would be…not hot, but definitely warm.

Good job I see a lot of those broken Get Foil board for sale really cheap that’s a good way to salvage one of them!

Nice! Yeah my buddy picked it up super cheap.
