Anti-spark idea

Im changing my battery setup and will not use BMS for discharge and switching this time.

So I need some kind of anti-spark solution.

I want to use Surloks for the connection.

I came up with this idea of having 3 panel mounted surloks at the battery:
Negative terminal
Positive terminal
Pre-charge positive terminal

When attaching the ESC to battery first plug in the - , then plug + to precharge for 4 sec and then remove it and plug it into the actual + terminal.

Does this work? How quickly do the caps in the ESC discharge? If there is like 10 seconds between precharge disconnect and actual connection will there be any sparks?

What kind of resistor should I use to limit the in-rush current? Battery is 14S and ESC is Flipsky 75200

Sounds overly complicated to me.

Check out AMASS 150 in antispark version. Good solid simple connector. Don’t need them all both + and - but why not.

I understand that you will be converting to a good waterproof hatch board.

Or a QS8-S (anti spark connector) Simple and effective.
If you want to go the resistor way… it’s 5Ω

Just take a 5 or 10 Ohm resistor and connect the second terminal with this resistor first (simply hold it in your hand) then connect directly. This is what I am doing since lomng time.

I do it similar on my builds

The caps do not discharge that fast, you have at least 5-10s.

Just be aware the open surlok connector is technically not waterproof anymore. If you want that and not worry about the 5-10s of changing connectors, just add a 3rd plug as well so all 3 surlok are mated all the time

I would use a 10 Ohm resistor, at least rated for 3W

The flipsky 75200 comes with an on/off switch - wouldn’t that prevent a spark if you connect first and then turn the ESC on?

I don’t think so, the spark comes from the capacitors on the input, they are always connected
The switch just turns the processor / circuit on or off, after the capacitors basically

So using the 3rd surlok plug method, you basically have 3 mated plugs in total (one neg, two pos), where one neg and one pos are connected to the battery, and another pos is just connected to a 10 Ohm resistor?

When connecting the battery, you first connect the neg, then the ‘false’ pos with the resistor, and then a couple seconds later disconnect and plug into the ‘real’ pos? Do you have a picture as to how attach the resistor to the surlok (or of your setup)?

You just keep the false pos plugged and additionaly plug the pos
No need to unplug the false pos at any time (except when you want to turn off / take the battery out of course :smiley: )

I don’t use surlok anymore, but I basically just solder(screw) the resistor between the false pos and pos terminal…

(You can of course swap the male and female parts)

I use the 2 connector method on one of my foils works really well. The others use the QS connectors allso work welll but i find not as water tight

Why not just use the BMS + a switch?

I am using an external balancer so no BMS for me, however my 2x 7s12p batteries are connected inside a peli box with QS-8 connectors, so I’ll plan on connecting the ‘external facing’ surlok plugs first, and the internal QS-8 after for antispark.
