Looking for a replacement ESC/VESC for my waist foil assist. My new Flipsky Mini FSESC v6.8 is useless worked once then gutless ever since - no idea why - suspect it fried itself (even though no faults in VESC tool and I’ve checked and rechecked and rebuilt all wiring).
I was looking at a Sequre 14200 after being recommended this - but noticed on the Sequre website that there is a 14130 as I cant but help think that 200A is overkill for an assist - ie my old FlyColor FlyDragon 80ESC worked perfectly for 6 months until I drowned it.
I guess the benefit of the 200 units is more headroom. Also ESC over VESC is simpler but you loose the config (I would really liked to have tried FOC etc).
Oh… i just received a reply from Sequre (i asked them if the 14130 would be suitable)… their response was:
“the 14130 ESC is not suitable for the 6384 motor. We recommend using the WP14200 ESC instead.”
Previously I would have agreed with you… however after having a crap time with the Flipsky Mini FSESC v6.8 - which has similar specs (12S, 100A, 150AMax/burst)… I now understand why. it seems these smaller ones have smaller traces on the PCBs and smaller MOSFETS or connections too them and much less capacity to handle the current and heat.
But yet, they should clearly state that and not advertise them as 100+A units as they clearly cannot handle that.
Wierdly… the FS mini gave me one great session when I had Motor Current Max set to 90A … and never since. it just gets to 40% throttle then does not provide any more thrust after that - but runs smoothly, just weak - so obviously hitting some internal limit. I have done a bunch of testing in a pool running the realtime analyser… and everything seems fine… just limited power output. When I increased the max motor current, it also scaled the output linearly… but to get the same power I had on session one, I would need to set it to 120A… which is clearly above its continuous rated limit of 100A. Makes no sense at all. I just figure its what Ive read, that FS have QA issues.
I’ve just bought a FS 75100 Pro… will see how that goes.
For up to 12S, I can recommend Harry Drive M Classic, it is good value for the price and excellent customer service. I run it in my hip assist for quit some time. It is compact and powerful enough for an assist with a 6384.
Phase 100A, 150 abs max, battery 75A.
Could go higher but with a 2P pack I’d rather limit the battery amps so my battery does not get too warm.
Not sure how you project your experiences over to the Sequre.
I have the 12200s which also have a very small formfactor and they work flawlessly.
On the bigger VESCs most of the size seem to result just from the number of connectors. I have the 75200 here on my desk and it is obviously just oversized for no reason at all.
Also considering what you wrote, what made you buy another 100A ESC?
re comparing to the 14130 sequre… I was assuming due to similar small form factor… but I could be completely wrong… which is highly likely because my old Dragonfly 80A ESC was even smaller and worked flawlessly (although it did overheat my batteries).
I decided to go with the 75100 for a few reasons… a local friend had one for sale, I like the configurability of VESC over standard ESC (/AM32/BLHeli32 etc) - much more options (a major one for me is battery current max), and from what I can see the 75100 is designed to handle for more heat, and also for much higher voltage than the mini which also gives more headroom… but mainly because it is probably the most popular/well used VESC on this forum - tried and tested and more info.
I have only just started to realise the benefits of going to higher S battery packs… meaning less heating on cells. Something I have yet to try.
