I started out knowing nothing about surfing, foils, or efoils. Over time, I got familiar with them and came to really enjoy the process. Right now, I’d say I’m just an enthusiast, mostly working with mature, ready-made components.
To a DIY expert, they might say: “The battery needs to be assembled manually, the casing has to be 3D printed, seals require all sorts of glues or resins, and the ESC has to be configured and installed yourself.”
Sure, there’s a group of people like that—sharing their DIY journey and enjoying the hands-on experience. But honestly, how many of us players really fall into that category?
If you’re a beginner, how much are you willing to spend to get started with powered hydrofoil surfing? Here are three options:
- Buy a ready-made Efoil
Cost: Most branded entry-level boards start at $7,000+
Advantages:
The battery box is integrated into the board, allowing for large-capacity batteries and longer ride time.
Ready-made Efoils usually come with powerful motors, making them easier to learn and faster on the water.
Things to consider: They are generally heavier and bulkier, so it’s recommended to go out with at least two people and use a roof rack for transport.
- Convert an existing non-powered foil board into a powered foil(See Accessories List)
Cost: Around $2,000–$3,000
Advantages:
Components are mature and affordable.
Flexible for custom assembly.
Easy to carry around.
Things to consider: Motor power and battery capacity should be chosen according to your speed preference and body weight.
