Choices for the backpack itself

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for the back pack itself. Which brand/model etc.

I want it to place a Camdenboss 210mm x 170mm x 10mm box inside. Weight of the box plus ESC and battery is 2.5 to 3 kilos so any thoughts on how supportive/padded it should be is welcomed. I’ve use dakine heli pack for skiing and that’s great but would probably take on loads of water weight. I’ve also seen lightweight ones that have just mesh for the shoulder straps… but maybe they would dig in and be uncomfortable with battery weight. Would love a tried and tested recommendation.

Better take a hip bag or a waist harness and fix it there. More convenient than shoulder straps.

Hmm back pack seems simpler and with a waist strap the weight should be well supported and divided between waist and shoulders . I find the waist mounted boxes just look a bit weird unless they are a custom made moulded box. Back pack just looks more normal because we’re used to seeing them on mountain bikers and snowboarders etc.

If I would do again another back pack assist I would start of from a hardshell harness for several reasons:

  • minimal amount of DIY work with sewing
  • maybe it’s a good idea to have the functions “strap stuff to rider” and “keep electronics protected” separate in order to ensure waterproofness
  • maximum protection from any sharp corners of the battery and electronics box
  • I expect to have more flexibility in the lower back and shoulders with only a harness instead of a full backpack

After using my waist harness for many sessions i would definitely recommend against a backpack… as they are loose and you are moving the centre of gravity to high.
Ive just used a weight lifting belt (made of webbing and foam) and it works very well. It needs to be snug against your body. You could also use a Kitesurfing ir wingding harness.
If i was to build another I would use an electrical box with a slimmer profile (wider and taller) and, ideally aluminium rather than plastic (for heat dissipation).

Thanks. I think I’ve found the best compromise. I’d like well designed/neat waist box but for an easy first build I’ve found a super light hydration style back pack with a removable waist belt. I’ve replaced the waist belt with a double velcro Lycra belt just like a dakine windsurf/kite harness. I sit it low on my back and the belt takes the majority of the weight. From trying them out you are totally right… getting weight on your waist is the key to comfort. I may come around to a waist set up but The back pack enables other things I want to do like have a straight, shortish cable with some extra tucked in the back pack rather than have to have a heavy coiled cable flapping around.

These are good value and have great mounting points
