DIY eFoil – Flipsky setup and alternatives?

Greetings from Denmark,

I’m completely new to foiling, but I’ve been windsurfing and kite surfing for years. I’m quite technical, which is why I plan to build the board and the battery pack myself.

I’m considering the following from Flipsky:

  • Motor: 65161
  • ESC: 75200 (water‑cooled)
  • Remote: VX3 Pro

Flipsky also offers a bundle for USD 569:

My questions:

  • Are there good alternatives to this motor/ESC/remote combo?
  • Has anyone used a NeilPryde Glide wind foil for an eFoil?

You might consider the VX5 vs VX3 as remote. I think the VX5 is now an option choice in that bundle

Not sure if you are going for full efoil or assist type but if full I recommend you have a look at the topics where people have used a commercial board rather than DIY that part.

yes i agree with foilguy, got the same setup from flipsky
indeed go for the vx5 , only a bit more money
you want to build battery inside or box on top? assist or full efoil…
buy an existing efoilboard is not cheap, even 2ened hand …(looks like these guys want to have a elite club there , not realy the surf spirit…)
i disagree there with foilguy. go for box on top or self build if you have experiance with epoxy/carbon/ …
i go for a box on top this year to get the right configuartion of al the components
al new stuf for me and have to examinate/study every part
next year/winter i build battery include board somehow (got some friens who made surfboards in the past)

You should browse the forum all the info is there. I also used that setup and my efoil is great. The most common alternative is the Maytech motor combo it’s pretty much the same but more expensive and with much worst customer support from what I have read. I would also go for the VX5 I haven’t tried it but I had 2 VX3 fail and the VX5 looks like a much better design.

As other have said building a waterproof light and strong board with a sealed easily accessible compartment is not so easy some have done it but it’s hardest part of the project. After 2 years of riding my efoil I can say buying a Flite board Pro board only was a really great decision it has the perfect shape and volume and after 2 years it has never leaked a drop of water. I’m also a kitesurfer and kitefoilier it’s a great sport for those no wind days it’s one of the best toy I ever spent money on!

Develop the skills to build a good board with an easy to use “leak proof” hatch and calculate how much money and time you just spent doing that. Maybe getting a good deal on a used board won’t seem MORE expensive then.

Nothing elitist or anti surf spirit at all. Where does that come from???

he foilguy, nothing personal. i looked around ( a lot) for buying a “good brand/perfomance” efoil board and new and prices go from 7k€ (beginner) to 18k€ (expert?) . who can buy a e-board form18k for hobby? not me :frowning: . thats almost the price for a litle car .2e hand you got the problem/possibility with worn out batterys. (also big cost) al these boards are made in china to , just like the cheap e-boards on the chinese sites. i almost wanted to buy a cheap chinese board. but then there is the compability problem with existing material from wingfoil… also the foils itself are probebly not top i guess (dont know, didnt try) yes and maybe you are right and its better to by existing brand efoil board. i looked at that to… but i think they over priced there material… so i do understand you point of view. :hugs:

Foilguy probably means that he bought the bare fliteboard and did the electronics himself. That is what i’d reccomend too! Only need to source the fliteboard, and from there its relatively easy to proceed with an adapter from @Kian.

yes i understand  , but also board alone they ask a lot for what it is (surfboard). i dont dissagree and also looked at that option. (and maybe i do like this) but my impression its to expencive for what it is is.

Try to find one used! Isn’t there a blackfriday sale going on? Saw some boards (also the pro) for under 2K on their own website. Yes, expensive, but they do keep their value very well, and it will offer you a great start and saving you a massive headache. Building from scratch isn’t for anyone. The fliteboards are extremely well built, super light and thin and very stiff/robust.

look what i just see on this forum, so thats a great option for a good price board i think

For that price you can buy a fliteboard from their shop…and most likely something second hand too.

yes correct . on teh site now black friday deals or so , normal board 3k now for 2k , boards from 5k now for 3k… but all for next year, no more money . this year my gong board with box on top (stil in progress fase)
dos gong mastfoot fit on these boards or need some adaption?

@Kian maybe still has some adapters left for fliteboard → gong

Well it sure felt that way on my end.

If a bunch of us were riding these then your “elite” comment would be valid.

However a number of DIY minded people here have decided to skip the board build for a variety of reasons and utilize a proven EFoil board platform developed by a lot of RD $.

I was simply pointing out a build option in support of a new member weighing his options.

im sorry , hope no offence :face_with_peeking_eye:
you’r my best friend here foilguy  and manny thanks for all the help and input you give me :hugs::hugs::hugs:
when i started the search for efoil i only saw all this creazy prices like you showing i was thinking it was not possible for me or i had to go for some chinese cheap thing where i was not sure or that was a good idee to spend my money.
lucky i found this site and have all the help. i am so happy for that becaus now it is possible for me. so thank you all. :+1::+1:

Thanks for all the responses! I honestly didn’t expect my post to get so much attention :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m going for the full efoil, and I still plan to build my own board. My father will help with that—he built his own windsurfing board when he was young.
I’ll be getting the XV5 remote instead of the VX3.
So far, I’ve read that the 75200 is good, so I don’t see any reason to upgrade it?

The 75200 is a popular choice for Efoil and there are lots of topics about how to configure it here. You will need to consider how you cool it - again lots of posts on that.

You also asked about the Pryde foil - I assume you already own this and want to repurpose it for your project. Is this it?

I’ve not read about anyone using it so can’t offer an opinion. Depends on how stiff the mast is and how easy it is to route motor wires through the interior etc.

You might want to look at the Gong products if you are purchasing.

I would suggest you visit a Fliteboard or Lift dealer and see what a quality product looks like for inspiration - even better take one out for a test ride or lesson. No reason to reinvent the wheel😉

75200 is a usually a good choice. I had one just randomly fail to start on it’s 3rd time out, but I have two others that have worked flawlessly.
The flipsky 75200 pro is nice because it includes bluetooth built in. This allows it to connect to the vesc app on a phone and you don’t need to plug in a separate bluetooth receiver if you ever want one.
There are water cooled options but it can also be cooled passively if you place it in contact with a heat sync. This is the approach used now in most commercial efoils and with the adapter-plate fliteboard based builds mentioned above. The ESC is mounted to the top of the mast and cooled by contact with the mast plate.

I have this foil from Neil Pryde. Front foil = 1602.2 cm2

If its not usable, ill go for the Gong V3 @523 euro.

anyone have any idee how hot a esc get by intesive (ab-)use in efoil boards? i have a water cooled to make sure it dont get to hot … not much more work concidering you have to do all the motor wiring too. but maybe next setup when building a box inside the board…
