Foil Assist Low Power - Help

Hi everyone -

I am having issues with my DIY foil assist build and am really beating by head against a wall.

Build details

Flipsky 6384
Flycolor X-Cross HV3 160A
Flipsky Two Blade Prop (and 3d printed hub with same results)
Camdenboss Enclosure w/exteral heatsink for the ESC
Olaflex 400 3G2.5 cable
Monicel 45B 6s2p x2 - 12s2p/48v total
Tattu 6s 7000mha Lipos (have a whole bunch from work)
Flipsky VX5 Remote
Axis Spitfire 960
JS 4’8 48L

The Problem!

I have an issue where the motor seems to be lacking any power. Under full throttle it hits a stop point where it throttle cuts when drops rpm down until it throttle cuts. I have managed to stop this by changing the β€œgear” setting on the low to limit to 50% throttle and as a result I can hold the trigger down and it will not throttle cut. However, this results in a lackluster power delivery (max 4km/h), walking speed and zero chance of a flatwater get up. I weigh 85kg. This is the same with both monicel and lipo packs. Unsure if this is expected and I have unrealistic power expectations from this set up.

What I have done -

Played with esc settings with no real improvement (temp limits off/on, amp limits off/on)
Replaced the cable
Checked all fittings/connectors
Removed rear circlip on motor checked for grinding/issues.

I am at a loss as I have seen so many other lower voltage builds with the same components. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers Jonno

Hello, can you give us a screenshot of blheli settings please ?

Here it is sorry for the reflection

Update - I have removed current protection and have set everything to default. I did static tests in the pool
and I am still getting power cuts at more that 80%. So much so I had an esc reset chime under full load. I am trying to work out if this could be a motor or esc issue. Any suggestions?

I did notice the cable was getting warm but esc was not overheating or super hot to touch (has external heat sink). Has anyone experienced a issue that was a faulty motor?

Had a similar issues on a Sequre 12200 - can be many things but I eventually isolated the issue to the ESC and upgraded to a Sequre 14200. Not saying its an ESC issue as I havent seen de-sync / cutoff issues on the Flycolor, but these are the steps i would take to isolate:

  • feed your esc setting to Claude/GPT and describe the issue, it might help
  • check all of your wire connection, check cable corrosion etc. any loose wire can cause this too
  • try a different esc if you have one. just to test and rule out other issues
  • get a new esc

Hi all -

@patfoil thanks for the tip - I ended up changing my LLM from Gemini to Claude who instantly picked up I did not have a esc ground as I was using a bec to power the receiver. Now runs great. Thanks all
