Hi,
I spent the first half of the summer rebuilding all the electronics and fitting a new Gong Allvator V1 80cm mast on my e-foil. I replaced my 65cm one to get some more playroom. Today was my second ride with the new setup and after some riding and maybe 4 crashes I noticed that the mast was crooked after putting it up on a dock.
Now I don’t know what to do. Go back to 65 or upgrade everything to V3 or V2? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Nothing unusual that I can pinpoint the damage to.
There are some older posts here stating the V1 mast was too flexible with eventual conversion to V2. Obviously the longer the mast the more flex there would be. It would appear that limitation is what has happened in your case causing the bent mast.
I used resin to attach my mast to mast base on my V2 mast (in addition to the screws😀) to ensure there is no play there
I was afraid that was the case. I guess I will have to do a quick swap to the old 65cm and do the V2 upgrade this winter instead.
That sounds very good! I was thinking of a good solution for that, because I did notice some play last year.
Bend is usually right at the top.
You can just cut that part off and retap.
Maybe that gets you a 72cm or so.
Yeah I was thinking about that also. But it would be a little more work than just switching back to the 65. Maybe I will find the motivation to do it next week. ![]()
If you have a chop saw and a m6 tap available, it takes about 5 minutes.
When I was still using that mast I felt like I had to do it almost daily
Always start with the 90 and work yourself slowly down to 55.
Yeah, I get that but I still have to cut the cables in the board and pull them out of the mast before cutting. I also think the bend is about 15 cm down on the mast, so I might as well but the 65 on, which is already prepared. ![]()
Haha! Is that so? And I was aiming for the V2 85 until next season. ![]()
That mast was designed for kitefoiling with a small wings. When the whole wingning and pump foiling craze started to they introduced the V2 mast for large wings and now they are on V3. I can probably still buy a V2 the front wing will fir but you will need a new stab and fuselage. Might be cheaper to get whole kit.
I think the pro fuselage is different from the regular one you want the regular one.
Gong has a bunch of different solutions to make cross versions fit together.
I would highly recommend you call them to see if they have a specific solution for your existing kit.
My mast is also bent like that. I think it is due to ‘hanging on to the board’. I just keep on foiling and doesn’t notice it at all. It not optimal, but might work for you as well.
Yeah, I guess the V1 is too weak. I did cut of the bent part. 11cm. So now it 4cm longer than last years mast.
Maybe I’ll upgrade to V2 this winter.
