I am about to build myself a new E-Foil, DIY and am searching for the best Gong V3 setup.
The reasoning behind V3 is that i want to stay current with technology and versions. I know V2 would be perfectly fine, used ones, but the new V3 are on sale now and new.
I am 90kg heavy and i would prefer manoeuvrability over speed. I will be using 65220 Flipsky motor and my ideal setup of foil atm is:
Front: Curve H FG V3 XXL
Stab: Curve H FG XL
Mast: V3 ALU 19, 85cm
I came to this selection of foil setup via recommendations but nothing verified that is why I am asking. I noticed a few V2 setups on forum and then I did some Surface area comparisons and came to the set up described above - XXL and XL Stab.
I would be grateful if anyone has the time to explain a bit the experience of V3 line and Efoiling!
I don’t have experience with V3 but Gong info is basically an increase from V2 in glide characteristics so a L size in V2 is NOT the same spec as L size V3.
I really like Gong but they don’t make this comparison easy.
I have posted a photo below of your preferred front foil range for others to reference but perhaps you could explain how you picked the XXL size
Foil is kinda a personal choice anyway so your opinion/ your $ kind of choice in the end
Edited the original post, but manly through surface area recommendations of V2 foils and then Gong line explanation. I am targeting quick progression so I over-jumped X-Over and Ascent and went directly to Curve. Now I was wondering whether it (Curve) is too wide already for manoeuvrability and turns…hoping someone can chip in valuable experience.
I’m 88kg and i have the gong v3 ascent xl 1290cm wing. I would probably recommend the ascent instead of the curve for your first foil.
The ascent is not as fast as the curve, but it’s still dangerously and thrillingly fast. You can still carve sick turns on the ascent.
One consideration is also the types of waves you will ride. If the waves are super clean and have just enough power for you, the curve might be better. If the waves are messy and power is more variable, then the ascent will be more stable.
Stability is really important for making foiling fun as you learn. Just about every foil will feel crazy fast and crazy fun, but youll progress so much faster on something stable.
Another consideration is wave height. For me, the 1290cm ascent xl works best in 1-2 foot waves, maaaybe 3ft. Anything bigger than that and i’m probably going to breach. But i’m only on session 30 or 40, so somebody with more experience can probably make it work.
I’m thinking of upgrading to the curve soon, around 1100cm size, to reduce lift when i take off on larger waves. But i could definitely still use the ascent for another 50 sessions at least before i really felt a NEED to upgrade
For manuevability, i’ve found wingspan to be a massive factor (i also have the gong trail XXL with like a 134cm wingspan)
The ascent XL has a 95cm wingspan. It will probably turn better than the curve xxl with a 107cm wingspan. I can’t guarantee that because i havent ridden the curve, but from the wings i have ridden, i feel like the 1-2 aspect ratio difference between curve and ascent isnt going to impact the turning radius as much as a 12cm difference in wingspan would
