How are fuselage lengths measured?

I’m wondering if there’s a universal way to measure fuselage lengths as a way to compare different manufacturers.
I see most measurements that are physical lengths from tip to tip which is fine as a description, but I don’t think that’s what should be used for performance characteristics since many fuselages are placed differently in relation to the intersection at the mast.
Should the universal method be to measure from trailing edge of the front wing to leading edge of the tail? Then would have to factor in the distance from the mast to front and tail wing. Any body have thoughts on this?

Not really comparable any way you do it. You need to know distance between centers of lift for the used wing and stab and mast to make any (exact) use of the distances.
