Learn before I build

Hi all,

I swear I have spent quite a bit of time on this forum and I’m quite impressed with the knowledge and the builds.you guys have done.

However, I have limited knowledge on electronics and feel no confidence in starting to build my own foil assist.

I kinda of get the parts needed for a built but the configuration is looking quite complicated for me to understand.

Saying so, does anyone recommend a cheap kit containing a esc, motor, battery and remote where I can program the esc and try to understand hands on how all this stuff works. I mean something smaller like a remote control car or anything similar.

Apologies if all I said is bullshit and there are better ways to learn. Any advice is welcoming.

I’m in Brisbane, Australia and I’m into wingfoiling.

Cheers,
OC

I don’t think that would help you much.

If you want to avoid getting everything at once, just get a ESC (MKS 75200 are sold pretty cheap at the moment) and a cheap but working motor (BDUAV 6384), connect any DC power source and get that running. You can replace the remote by a potentiometer as an analog input for the VESC.

In Germany that would amount to slightly over 100 EUR and all parts can actually be used later on.

Thanks mate. That sounds a way better plan.

I’m in QLD, up north of the Sunshine Coast and done a few basic builds.

Contact me through a message if you want and I can get you sorted with a simple but reliable setup, similar to a Foil Drive.

I’ve been through the tough initial learning stage and this site isn’t learner friendly, I’m happy to help and you can talk to someone if needed.

Thanks mate. Just sent you a message.

I would think starting on a bench is easiest/cheapest. From my perspective, the most difficult part in electronics is really the ESC configuration.

Get yourself the right motor and right esc and some cheap PWM controller (arduino? if you know how to program). But potentiometer might be even better.
This is all you need to start playing with this stuff and understanding the next steps.

Thanks mate, I’m convinced to start this way.
