LiftX vs FLITELab* AMPJET for learning Foil Surf

I’m thinking the LiftX will be better for learning as it has more assisted power…thoughts?

Depends very much on your skills in the surf and your end goal. If you are a competent surfer then the AMP will be harder at the start but will get you closer to surf foiling without the assist and feel more like surf foiling even with the Jet in. The AMP is about half the weight of a lift X and you can use it with or without the Jet. Without the Jet it paddles and rides just like a performance prone board. You can also use any brand foil with the AMP.

On the other hand you can use the LIFTX in flat water to learn, it heaps easier to learn but much heavier. The transition from an efoil to surf foil is still a bit of a jump. And you really can’t use an efoil around people in the surf as it’s too heavy and dangerous. You really need to find a break to yourself. But the learning curve at the start is much faster.

Without having used either, I’d say both are pretty bad for learning to foil surf.

The takeoff like Bennet does into unbroken waves, is extremely tricky to do. Far harder than a regular prone foil takeoff and miles harder to just use a foil assist and motor into waves.

The LiftX is far too heavy for my taste und unsuitable for most locations for that reason alone.

FLITELab is supposed to be working on an assist type mast for their boards. I imagine that would give you a different experience, more like a trench style board with gen2 Foil Drive (which is another option).
Maybe @oceanfrother can comment (he works there and I believe is the inventor of the amp jet concept)

We have got a few people up that have never proned before. It definitely not a magic bullet but it does help a little as you are getting into fatter waves rather than a more critical take off on a prone. It also gives you a little more time to stand up as you can stop paddling earlier and focus on standing up while the jet is still pushing you. It is slightly different to a prone take off as people who have proned a lot take at up to half a session to get use to the timing. As for AMPMast yes we are working on that. It will use the same Board and batteries as the Jet with additional battery options.

independent review from someone who hasn’t proned before but has foiled.
