Hi,
I wanted to share one way to build a DIY tow boogie. I call this project “MahtiTow”…
The base is a heavily modified old kite formula board. The hull has been rebuilt to include separate sealed compartments for electronics and batteries.
Setup
2x Flipsky 75100 Pro V2 (VESC)
2x Flipsky 6384 motors
BREMOTE controller
Motor mounts / masts:
The motor masts are made from Fanatic aluminum foil mast, cut to length and modified with TIG-welded plates at the base to mount them to the board.
Battery setup:
4x 6S4P packs
Wired as 12S per motor (2 packs per motor)
Testing & Performance
Since the ice has only recently melted here in Finland and the water is still near freezing, the first ~5 test sessions have been done using a larger board and foil.
With a Sabfoil 1360 Leviathan, the range is around 20 km, which is more than enough for my use.
I know many people here have had issues with Flipsky products, but my experience has actually been quite positive.
The 75100 VESCs performed reliably last summer (~200 km without issues).
I did have problems with the VX3 remote, but it was replaced under warranty with a VX5, which has worked great since.
For cooling, I’m running passive aluminum heatplate on the VESCs, which I expect will improve long-term reliability of the electronics.
This project took way more time than I expected. Roughly 4 months of evenings and weekends.
In many ways, it has actually been more challenging than building an e-foil, but also a lot more interesting.
The system is not quite finished yet — next step is dialing in the motor trim, as they currently hit the surface a bit and cause some slapping in the water.
So far, though, the result feels very promising.
The boogie also works surprisingly well as a remote-controlled water drone ![]()
Next step is adding GPS follow me mode, but that’s currently in the hands of the BREMOTE development team — waiting for a future firmware release!
Shoutouts
Big thanks to:
@hangloose – MTW-30 + motorpod 3D models (with small modifications they fit this project perfectly)
@ludwig_bre – help with BREMOTE wiring and setup
