sorry I don’t know how to analyze the quality of waterproofing
(time will tell ?)
I bought this motor 4 weeks ago and tested it with different self made props. It is possible to efoil with the motor with my setup: 80kg Gong 85L Board 12S16Ah Battery and 1250cm² foil.
You only need a good ESC that will not overheat ![]()
What is a little bit disappointing with this motor is the stainless steel bearing, as mine already has set up rust.
I tested yesterday my 7070 to efoil with 12S3P molicel P42, motor at the bottom of my 75 cm mast, the same 3D printed guide, 45L surf foil board, it worked like a charm, really surprised how well it behaves.
Regarding rust, I don’t have any rust here, I think that the circlip rusted and the rust on the bearing comes from the circlip. I removed circlip a long time ago, to be able to remove the rotor and rinse it, and some lanolin spray ro prevent rust
Strange, I have a ceramic bearing on the side, and an inox on on the other side (the inox one does’nt have any rust after 20 sessions)
I’m using a 7070 with a lower volume Slingshot kitesurf board. I have to get the board on plane before I can stand up on it and begin foiling. I can’t quite get it on plane with my current setup. I would love more info on the builds that are successful with this motor or any advice!
Motor: FlipSky 7070 110kV
ESC: Hobbywing Seaking 130A HV V3, water cooled
Battery: 12S 16Ah LiPo 15C
Propeller: Custom 3D printed, 3 blade, 160mm diameter, pitched for ~25km/hr
Diagnostics: None.
Foil: Slingshot Apollo 60cm.
This setup worked beautifully with my previous geared motor system.
Next steps: I’m going to try a new prop with a lower pitch and 2 blades. After that, I’m going to look into measuring motor current, battery voltage to see if I’m current limited by the ESC or torque limited by the motor.
It could be this motor just isn’t powerful enough to get my board on plane. Maybe it’s time to find a bigger board.
Three blade 160 mm / pitch 100 roughly? Seems already a low pitch, i’d try to lower the diameter a bit. The data i’ve seen suggest prop efficiency is higher around 1:1 pitch/dia
What rpm does it reach at full speed? If it’s less than 2500, then it’s likely overpropped.
Its your prop. Im 95kg and can get a 24L board on the plane with 12s at 80a. Use a k own working prop to proof the build and then start to experiment.
Thanks for the replies all,!
I think this is the data point that I needed: Doing a water start on a small board is possible with 80A.
I suspect I’m hitting the torque limit of the motor with my current prop. Funny, it worked really well on my last build, which had a gearbox, using the same foil.
I’m going to try one of the props from RC test flight. If anyone has any recommendations for the other known props, those would be appreciated.
I might also experiment with 2 blades and a lower pitch, and maybe a lower diameter with my current design.
