Relay + electromagnetic switch

Hey guys,

I’m sure someone has already gone through that. I would like to avoid having a physical switch and I was looking at a hall switch + relay.
But the working current is too small for my relay which requires 1amp on the coil side (see link this is 0.2amp, some are 0.3 but that’s still far).

Any ideas? Obviously I can put two relays in series but it seems a bit of an overkill.

What are you trying to archive? A kill switch?

If so that functionality is built into a VESC and works pretty good. The kill switch can be triggered by a hall effect switch module of a reed switch.

I have used one of these wired directly into ADC2, 5V and GND.

Thank you so much for the answer, that only part of the idea. I think your idea would also work with an esc, just put it on the signal wire.
But to be honest I’m not building a foil but a powered float for spearfishing. This means that the electronic box is in water for quite a long time and I’m trying to minimise the amount of electrics which are in contact with water. That’s the main idea of the electromagnetic switch.

Still not too sure what you are trying to switch on and off, but consider a solid state relay that can be triggered by a very low current.

@pablo_foil used reed switch with leash as a safety.

Have a search on the vesc forums for kill switches. Easy to set up (5v, GND and signal to an ADC2 port on the vesc) the only hardware required is a proximity switch (linked above).

I’ve found that the 6V proximity switch version works fine at 5V.

Photos show a very rough set up before I 3d printed parts. I don’t have any other photos or videos sorry.


Disabled

No kill switch is used.

PPM Low

The kill switch is active when the PPM input goes low.

PPM High

The kill switch is active when the PPM input goes high.

ADC2 Low

The kill switch is active when the ADC2 input goes low.

ADC2 High

The kill switch is active when the ADC2 input goes high.

Hey thanks for the link. Basically the box containing the battery and reciever needs a switch. This would be a physical switch, or an electromagnetic switch. Because of the amount of water what will go over the box I was thinking of an electromagnetic switch.

That’s a cool idea, but I’m not using a VESC at the moment (mostly for apace reasons)
