Ultimate foil assist for waves

What do you think, will it be easier for the 5085 with a larger foil, or will there be too much foil drag and it will draw too much current (be too expensive/power-hungry)? I have the Sabfoil Leviathan series: 950, 1350, 1550, and 1360pro (unfortunately, I sold the 1150). I have two boards, 85L and 90L. I weigh 82kg. Does it make sense to try the 5085, or should I rather buy the proven 6384 option? Battery is a 12s3p Molicel P50B.
I would use it for foil assist while winging, as well as for a light efoil (and for fun for teenagers).

Which ESC is best to use for this backpack/back-mounted variant? I have a ZESC Raiden 7, a Flipsky Mini FSESC 6.8 (which I think is less suitable), or should I look into something else?

if it’s your first foil assit kit, choose the 6384, it’s a safe bet.
I did a second test, was not able to flat waterstart with 1150cm² front wing, without the help of a wave, not possible, a little disapointed

Nice! I am 78kg. I can flat water start with a couple of double arm paddles on my 4’6 if the water is not too choppy, and the battery level rather high. This motor is definitely for advanced prone assist in waves for minimal weight and drag. Upwind downwind I have not tried with the 5085… I think it’s really on the limit for me. Maybe with a big glider foil or with a pod low on the mast. For that I still use the trusty 6384.

Agreed with @nicolasLGM , maybe 6384 is the safe bet and 5085 is if you want minimum weight and drag at the price of thrust, which will depend on the case of use. If you can do what you need with 50A limit, 5085 is a viable option

In order to avoid having a pod on the mast, I made a mini mast behind the mast that is quicker to setup (a bit like @Bzhwindtalker ). It definitely works great, but more weight on the tail of the board, a bit more flex, and prop close to the tail. To be continued, maybe carbon layup for lighter, and diagonal mini mast to get closer to the main mast. 3D file on onshape :

Hey Foilstate, thanks for all the detail on your journey in paving the way with smaller motor and solid state battery.
I’ve been talking to Racepow and was looking at buying three of the 13000 mAh 12s packs. It turns out that the data they have on the website is incorrect. They state 5C constant current with 10C peak. What Charlene from Racepow is saying now is that those packs are actually rated at 3C constant current and 5C peak - so 3 x 13000 or 39A constant and 65A peak for 10 - 30 seconds.
I’m 65kg on 34L board and have been using foil assist for ages so I’m sure I’d be fine but had been thinking of recommending these packs to my heavier friends but having second thoughts now.
Seeing you have experience with Molicel and Samsung packs just be curious to know if you have noticed much difference in performance.
I’ve made packs with Molicel P42 and P45 and BAK 45 and just recently made some Reliance RS50 packs. The new tabless cells are phenomenal.
Suspect as you have experienced that the 5085 and the solid state 13,000 packs actually work nicely together as a light weight lower power setup.
Wondering how much difference there is between the traditional li-ion packs and the solid state with the small motor. Appreciate all the detail you are sharing :+1:t3:

In the comments under this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-xgjMCU0bw), several people describe serious injuries caused by folding props. We should treat this as a real hazard and consider adding a proper kill switch to our designs.

In your design, the motor plate mates directly with the propeller hub, and the rotational force from the spinning prop keeps the two parts locked together under load. If I’m understanding this correctly, there’s no need for bolts to secure the hub to the plate. That would also mean we could swap props right on the water. I am making a version for 6384 off your concept.

Theoretically, solid states are less powerful and don’t give enough discharge. In practice aka real life, they feel more powerful, punchy, less voltage sag than the samsung 50s. As if it had a higher C rating… go figure. Everything about the solid state has been an upgrade to me, except for the price.

I tend to address problems once they happen at least once, otherwise overengineering happens fast. I heard of kill switch on tow boogies as they can start going away full speed.

There are 2 bolts securing the plate to the hub, if I understand what you mean correctly (?)

Did you print the rubber band to fix it to the mast from TPU or where did you get it from. It seems to be only 15mm wide. The one I use for the 6384 pod (from ali express) is 20mm wide, so it won’t fit. I could print one from TPU but those are not as elastic as those from “rubber”.

I cut the 20mm rubber to 15mm width with a cutter, works well :slight_smile:

(you’re right TPU printed is not elastic enough )

Thanks, after I posted the question, Iwas thinking to do the same. I have some spare ones to cut.
I converted the pod, lid and the plugs from stl to step as I could not transfer them to fusion with the built in thinkercad export feature. It is not perfect but acceptable quality in Fusion360. I need to print it and see if it fits. The step files are nice to have if somethings needs to be adapted, especially the TPU insert for the mast. If that’s ok, I can share it after I test printed it.

Try printing with PEBA. It has a much higher modulus of elasticity than TPU.
