Waydoo Kickstarter gathered $268K. Is $4K commercial eFoil realistic?

Hope Waydoo sees this and can work on their quality control.

I’ve seen lots of people complain about the wing screws. Some stripped or broke easily, others are loose or don’t fit and stick out. Many reports of battery problems as well. Some from a magnet being placed wrong and others that sound more serious. Backer #1 says his board fills with water and he can hear it sloshing around. I would not feel safe riding one of these and would have very bad buyer’s remorse if I hadn’t canceled my pledge.

Waydoo would probably go bankrupt if they had to fix all the problems they’ve created. I feel bad for the distributor who will be forced to answer all the phone calls this week. Poor guy didn’t make this junk!

I wondered why more companies don’t use EPP foam like Waydoo and now I think we have our answer. Water inside board leads to cracking foam

I’m struggling to wrap my head around the physics of this. If the board was a hollow foam shell, full of water and left to rest on its side, I can imagine it might tear from the weight of water if you lifted it (or if you froze it!). But I don’t think it’s hollow, is it? If it’s solid, which I believe it is, what mechanical process could cause that?

I will add that there are some suspect scuffs along that outside edge that give me some doubt about the explanation given.

@FoilFiesta - could you provide links to your sources?

The waydoo EPS board is completely solid, the damage we see is not coming from water on the ‘inside’. The boards don’t have a watertight compartment that can leak or accumulate water. Only the battery and mast assembly are watertight modules. Ofcourse it can still be an production error/weakness but I think this is caused by a coulision/drop/bump on water or land. A waydoo owner in the netherlands is providing lessons with his board and a hit with the dock during a lesson gives similar damage.

Can`t believe that this damage comes from water leaking.! I measured the weight after putting it in the pool for 4 hours and it is about 150-200g heavier after riding and not drying it. so assume EPP i possibly soaks up about 150ml of water that will dry out, there was no sign of water leaking out or “waterfall”
So I really wonder how this could break the board, as it is very durable. I have now pierced the middle with a long needle but it doesn’t go through, there must be some kind of hard structure or plate in the middle… maybe someone knows more about the inside?

150ml would be barely enough to dampen that surface area, let alone soak in.

There is an aluminum frame inside.

It’s on Facebook backers group I can’t link to private group. Owner of the cracked board swears he never hit anything or scuffed it. Waydoo told him it’s normal for the foam to absorb water. More than one has bent mast

Waydoo and their NA distributor are working on these issues, likely just due to a limited production batch problem and not an overall design flaw. They have shown early production versions to be reliable, and newer production versions are being delivered in the coming weeks.

Lift and Flite had issues early on too and handled it with good service (from what I’ve heard)

Give Waydoo a chance to stand behind their product and make this right.

They say they are working on the issue, but that’s no guarantee. Check what happened to the biggest electric skateboard companies when they had simple issues… I think there’s a lot to learn there!

I think you meant pre-production versions, however their current production unit isn’t even reliable, so that statement is null and void. No production unit is classed as reliable until the majority of boards are without issues and Waydoo simply haven’t been in the market long enough for this yet (and loads are having issues).

I’m pretty sure most people will give Waydoo the chance to make this right, but the question still has to be asked: Will they and can they afford to without going under? That’s the actual reality…

Every day their list of problems grows. I wonder if they can afford so many warranty claims.

  • Board taking on water, heavier after riding
  • Board cracking
  • Screws are the wrong size
  • Holes not tapped fully
  • Screws easily strip and break
  • Mast bolts can fall out while riding
  • Wing loose and wobbles
  • Battery shutting off randomly, solved by placing thin piece of metal under underneath sticker
  • Motor randomly loses power
  • Clip holding battery to board falls off
  • Mast bending (31.5” only?)
  • Remote showing S - appears when a communication problem/software error occurs. It may happen if the bluetooth connection is unstable. Reboot to fix
  • Backing peeling off battery
  • Fuselage corroding (salt water?)
  • While charging - battery was blinking red and blue, manual shows this is an error
  • Water inside remote
  • Battery moves while riding

Their foam board design is clearly a mistake and now they say it’s expected for the board to absorb water. Already some complain about warranty process being poor.

Which competitor do you work for? It’s an early stage product. Why do you want them to fail so badly? Is it because you spent 2-3x to buy or build your own eFoil?

Give Waydoo a chance to work out these early issues. Lift and Fliteboard (and basically every other manufacturer) had early production issues that they resolved to keep their current and prospective customers happy.

There are lots of people (including KS backers) riding theirs without any of these problems. Manufacturing issues occur. I don’t think any of these are design flaws (maybe aside from the longer mast needing more reinforcement…that’s still TBD)

For the record I’m an early KS backer with no recourse if they don’t deliver a usable product or make good on their warranty. For anyone buying retail, (in theory) they have some protection via the reseller/distributor they purchase from.

Actually the way you are protecting waydoo @3rdparty leads me to believe that you are working for them.

Agreed.

@3rdparty, it really sounds like you are much more defensive of the company than you should be as a simple backer. The proof is in the pudding. Have they resolved anyone’s problems yet? It sounds a lot to me like there are countless people hung out to dry with brand new broken proprietary technology that they cannot obtain parts from the manufacturer or reasonably fix from aftermarket offerings without basically building their own board.

KS backer delivery has just started (I don’t even have mine yet). If I have issues with mine and get radio-silence from them, you’ll hear from me loud and clear. I’m just saying lets give them a chance to sort these early issues out. Good news is by spring when people in Northern Hemisphere are shopping for their next eFoil we will have a clear picture if Waydoo can deliver/support a reliable product or if buyers should look elsewhere.

As a side note, curious to see the $2k price drop on Lift E2 - I wonder if this is to clear out old stock in anticipation of a new model or them trying to compete with the lower cost options.

Where do you see this? Their website has std pricing

This was an email from Real Watersports. Other US dealers advertising similar discounts

I work for no one and I do not support or oppose any efoil company, all I post are simple facts. Waydoo almost stole $4,000 from me with their deceptive advertising so I may watch them more critically than others but that is their own fault. I have also been watching Fliteboard and Lift since 2017 and neither one had problems like Waydoo.

I am shocked every day by the number of major problems Waydoo owners experience with so few boards delivered. Bent masts, broken fuselages, boards full of water, remotes full of water, batteries that barely last 40 minutes. As a Kickstarter product I expected problems but not so many or so extreme. Who could ride this efoil with confidence after seeing pictures of multiple fuselages that snapped in half for no reason??? It’s no wonder many backers are regretting their purchase and hoping to sell their boards.

Only a tiny sample of their problems, by now there are far too many for one person to follow. It’s amazing that Waydoo will not proactively fix backer boards that shipped with defective parts even though they know there are multiple problems.

More bent masts

Multiple fuselage broken

Battery plug fire hazard

Remotes aren’t waterproof

Another broken fuselage

Very low battery life for multiple users

Not replacing faulty parts Waydoo NOT proactively replacing weak fuselage

THEY KNOW THE PARTS ARE WEAK!!! Once your fuselage snaps they’ll offer a replacement :-1:

They KNOW parts are weak

Backers want to sell their boards before they arrive!!!
