Hi guys, I’m planning to build a foildrive system for myself. Wondering which motor will work the best for this application.
6384 is prob the best, cheap aliexpress BDUAV works great, if not the Flipsky is great too
If you want ”better” then the flipsky 6384 is a good option. The aliexpress ones have too small phase wires and need waterproofing (but are of course cheaper)
Is it a must to change the phasewires on the cheap motor? What happens when they are too small?
Wires are 16awg on the cheap 6384 motor i just got so losses and heating will be the result during starts, it can get too hot, especially where they are bundled together entering into the motor. That’s a hotspot and i’ve had heatshrink melting there causing short circuit.
Do you know how much is the peak current? Thanks
It’s a grey zone but in my experience 150A, even 200A phase current can be ok for a 120kV motor that is used under water. Not continuously but for the duration of a start on a foilboard.
As a reference, in my eFoil setup I run a Saite 63100 140KV with max phase amps of 170A, it didn’t burn until now. I crimped 8 AWG directly to the end of the windings.
I set 150A motor current on my VESC for the Waterproof Flipsky 6384 motor. If you change the ceramic bearings to stainless steel ones (takes 5 minutes and no need for special tools) you get a nice motor.
