XXL tow boogie/SIB e-boat (65161 14S12P servo-motor steering)

Had some issues with the Makerbase 75200 VESC, where it seems like the motor is in short ciruit on two phases.
I will try again with a silixcon SC or a MKS84200HP. Hope the motor is fine, I tested for shorts and all phases output same BEMF, so it must be the VESC (it is from previous projects and unknow working state).

Advice for makers : never buy a ARM laptop, so many apps and drivers are impossible to get working.

Confirmed the motor works fine with a silixcon ESC, 4A no load (with prop) seems reasonable;
The loaded firmware does not support PWM, if I can change it to the PWM compatible firmware I will use this SC controller instead of a vesc, it will not need cooling for 5kw and is capable of 300+A
The size is the same as a 200A vesc but has 24 mosfets (optimos5)

Closed the motor with this as the seal seemed to be damaged :

Edit : vesc also works, it Was them damm phase filters.

This should be fun.
Alu plates ordered, alu flipsky 2 blade on the way, ds-600 remote also on the way (cancelled the w6, really bad feedback on french groups)
Ds-600 rx is compatible to 14v max, so it will run direct from DC/DC. Only gnd and signal goes to vesc and servo.
For the remote, some french guys added a induction pad to the USB, and sealed the remote in a bag.

For people with 65161 motor experiance, can I expect the same performance as a 6hp 2stroke or more, on 14s?

The 65161 motor is powerful but so is 6hp 2 stroke. I think the comparison will depend a lot on what props are being used on each motor and where you want the power/speed curve to be.

Lots of low speed thrust or more top speed oriented.

Keep an eye on if there is any transom flex when you start from standstill.

Better use the fliteboard prop instead of the 2 bladed one. I get 6200 W out of this system with 14s. I can send you the motor config if you need it. I also made a normal outboard from an old minn kota electric outboard with only 750 w before, now it has 9,5kw 70165 Motor fsesc 75350 and 14s.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have more details about your minkota conversion ?

The 6hp gets on plane and to 20kph with 2 light adults and a kid, but with 3 adults and a kid it does not fully get on plane, stuck at 10km/h max.

Alone in the boat I reach 26-27kmh.

I hope to get on plane with 3 adults and one kid, it is the max confortable capacity of the boat anyway.

For towing, I am not sure where would be the best point. If I attach it on the motor, I will destroy the servo for sure. Some Y line coming from both sides of the motor mount /transom should work, but also need to make sûre I get no interférences to the motor.
If I go above the motor with a tow pole, it may put even more loading to the transom, and cause the boat to pitch up a lot when empty.

Lots of things to experiment with !

I take this very old model, because nearly everything is solid metal, only the lid is plastic. And you get them for 50eur. Then for the motor mount I took a aluminiumpipe and put the motor inside.

And after two times clapping in your hands it look like this.

I think the primary issue will be pushing the boat onto plane with this load, I would imagine the motor will not have enough torque for the propeller required to achieve this much power.

I wonder about doing a gearing between the motor and the propeller, this way you could increase the low-end torque and spin a bigger propeller.

I’ve been thinking about this for smaller tow boogie, where the top speed doesn’t matter to me, but I’d like an extremely high torque setup with a big propeller to get a sinker board and small foil out the water.

Yes, you have a good point, can be solved by running stupid high phase amps, for momentarly get enough torque to get on plane. I am not sure what is the saturation of the motor, but the phase windings are quite thin, like awg12 or so.

Making some test fit with printed parts while I wait for the laser cut plates and other items. The servo speed seems adequate for a full size boat, the Gears fit.

Some of the parts may need to switch to SLS nylon at some point, like the main shaft for the Mout to grab on or the gears. The main shaft needs to transmit the torque, even if the alu tube goes inside. There are no bearings planned, just alu tube on the plastic parts as the main pivot.

Ordered a bre remote v2 as the longer term remote solution for this setup.

I love the hotwired little rc care rx remote

From where did you order the servo?

Servo from Aliexpress, 50€ with the adapter flange to transmit torque.

Yes. I see a lot of sellers on Alie with different prices.
Which seller did you use? (do you have a link?)

thank you. we will order one today (for another project)

Received some more stuff.
Could not pair the ds-600 rx to the ds-600 remote, but the supplied rx survives 12v.

Waterproofing this remote is not feasible.
It will go in a dry bag for tests.
Bremote parts are printing.

The flipsky propeller is comically thick on the blades (more than 8.5mm at the thickest part), it will definitely be a backup prop… Unless I sand the blades a lot. Hub is nice. Edit, sanded the blades extrados, from 8.5 to <5mm

Prepared the battery to be cast in epoxy. Some needed peace of mind, based on the weight of the pack, removed cell holders and salvage status of those cells. My biggest fear is not overheating or hot spots as I will draw 50% less current than what the packs were designed for, but mechanical shock/battery drop getting the packs in short, and epoxy will prevent most of the issues about that problem.

Those cells do not vent in my experience over 15k cells (samsung/EVE 50E) and potting did not seem to have bad side effect on my assist batteries.

Depending on the results of the tow boat/consumption, I will buy/build a proper pack for it, this is slightly above my threshold for safety, especially due to the size of the pack. Maybe a 2nd hand surron/talaria pack but they are only 2kwh (16s)
