That all sounds good! The riding record is especially handy when testing and comparing different props etc.
I’m more scared if I buy one all the other maytech remotes I have will be wasted

Yes I hear you on the I already have remotes thing. I have a VX3 that is still in its box - redundant backup if I have a failure
Testing props is exactly what I was thinking the driving record would be useful for.
You always need a spare remote, especialle when you take your efoil on holidays.
Can you then download the logs or are they stuck on the remote?
Nothing in the manual about that so I have asked Flipsky about adding that feature.
Supposedly you can have 15 records in remote
For now I would just take a photo of detail record or type data into a spreadsheet.
Have you tried connecting it to a computer? maybe it will appear as some kind of unspecified device with some files on it and logs might be there.
Good that seems more water proof from your initial impressions. Ultimately i think just need to give it time and hopefully it holds up.
I haven’t connected to pc yet as I’ve just been having fun with it on the water and haven’t generated any records that I care to save anyway.
I have requested Flipsky to post the original firmware to their new site. If they do I would be able to roll back to original if I don’t like the newer version. It might already be there but there are two bin files in one folder and only 1 bin file in the new ver folder. They have told me that they will be posting a YouTube vid with detailed instructions soon.
At $259 -VX5, $110 - VX3 pro and $95 - VX3, the price differential isn’t much imo based on the apparent quality of the VX5.
Assuming the waterproofing is solid which I may not find out do to my usage (fresh water, full Efoil, rarely immersed longer than a few seconds) it logically would remove what appears to be the biggest cause of failure with the less expensive products.
I also have the mindset that I saved thousands of $ by DIY vs buying commercial so using a bit of that for a better remote is justified
Are thos e all the parameters? Can you get current and voltage too?
That’s the “detailed view” they provide in the initial ver of firmware. No user control over what is displayed.
I just updated the firmware of the handheld (this version does not require update to receiver)
The only feature change is the layout of the screen. A new menu item allows a choice of the initial “detailed” screen and two versions of the “simplified” screen. See below for Detailed then Simplified 1 and last Simplified 2
The process was quite easy once I got by Win11 refusal to download an exe extension file🤨
As expected the new firmware version requires the user to reconfigure the remote for their preferences so thankfully I had made some notes on what I changed the first time😀
Haven’t used it in the water yet but I’m liking the BOLD speed numbers in simplified as that’s what I tend to glance at the most.
EDIT:
New Flipsky YouTube documenting this process.
END EDIT
ANOTHER EDIT:
Just discovered that in the Simplified screen you can rotate through all of the parameters that get displayed by repeatedly pressing the MODE button.
END EDIT
Just pulled the trigger on this. Quite excited to see how it compares and feels in the hand. May also try get some custom code into it!
Having now had multiple sessions with this remote I’m quite impressed with it. No sign of water intrusion but I’ve already mentioned that I don’t immerse the remote often. I accidentally dropped it on a concrete surface and it didn’t even leave a blemish on the surface so it passed the “drop test”
Really liking the Driving record function. I’m testing props that a friend is designing and the session snapshot is a great way to compare actual data without needing to generate a VESC log.
I have discovered though that each time you start or stop the “recording” it zeros out the display’s ride time, distance traveled etc. Not a big deal but it’s not the same as the VX3 which displays the session totals until you power it off.
I just got this remote as well. Seems ok so far, but couple things:
How do you start recording for the Driving record?
Also I’m having issue with “gear up” button being same as “cruise control” so at speed if I want to gear up it goes to cruise control instead. @Foilguy did you have this kind of issue?
Double tap power button to start and stop recording of driving record.
I don’t like cruise control so have it turned off but you are correct as the manual indicates a short press of setup button is stated for both of these functions.
What version of firmware did your remote ship with?
I ended up disabling the cruise mode, now it works really well.
Mine shipped with 1.0.1
Glad you have a solution.
I had a bad experience with Cruise control on VX3. Early days and I wasn’t aware the remote could do that. Accidentally turned it ON and was foiling along and let off trigger and the board did NOT slow down. A lot of frantic button pushing and a big crash.
Love that feature in my car but not efoiling.
I introduced someone I know to E Foiling recently and my VX5 had its first real immersion test (fresh water). A lot of falls resulted in the remote being fully dunked a whole bunch of times over the 1 hour session including swimming back to the board. Happy to report no damage to the remote.
EDIT
We started with no gears and he struggled with speed control - switched to 8 gears and he found that much easier so I now know the gear ability has its uses.
END EDIT
I would be interested in hearing how others are doing with their VX5’s
