Fresh build from Slovenia

Your build looks amazing. I’m wondering which inserts you used on the bottom to mount the mast plate.

I’m thinking about a wooden frame with inserts that are closed on their top, so that no water can enter the board, but all inserts i find are open on both ends.

Should such inserts be screwed into the wood or only epoxy glued or both?

Thanks

This topic was one of the things that I spent most of brains on :). Well in Slovenia we have a company that making special inserts for snowboards and sometimes windsurfs. Those ones are made from inox for salt water adn are M6. I used those for almost everything that isn’t mast plate (handles, latch mechanism). For mastplate screws I needed M8 inserts, so i told that to the owner that helped me with everything and he said he is ready to make costom one’s for me. So I modeled them in fusion and he made them for me. I will post a picture down here. I was sceptical about everything being strong enough, but now i see i made everything robust and there is not way anything could brake at inserts and mastplate.

Thats exactly what I’m looking for. The only ones I found were on Alibaba and they sell only in big quantities.

I was thinking about M6 threads. Do they make those? I live in Vienna and could maybe even come by and pick them up

Yes, they are making m6 inserts for application like this. I was thinking about m6, but in the end i went with safer option. When i get home, I can show you how they look. The are few version of them, like 6-8-10mm in height. Every insert has a “cap” on so epoxi doesnt get inside thread when laminating. I am sure they would be ready to sell some to you and send it by post, so you don’t have to come here.

That would be great. I am using a 18mm Paulownia wood frame to glue in the board, so a longer thread around 12-15mm would be ideal.

I also found an alternative product, but it would need to be closed off, which should be possible. Its not perfect, but would work as well.

They have m6 from 6-10mm. They are way more robust than the ones you sent, but those may work okay aswell. Here is the picture of insert.

Would you be able to find out the price of a m6 and/or m8 insert with 10mm?

Let’s switch to PM

Here are the best inserts:

They look great but UK based, which is a hassle to ship into the EU. I think I found a pretty good alternative here.

Stainless steel T-nuts with M8 threads and an overall height of 12mm. I have to close off the top, but that should be an easy task.

T-nuts have a very different use case. The inserts I posted have a 32mm base which is a much greater area and will provide more strength. You also need to make sure to us marine grade stainless steel (A4 or 316 grade) so that they do not corrode and rust.

You can try to find inserts from composite shops.

The material is A4, so that would be ok. Maybe I will find those real inserts, but I think they could be an alternative if nothing is available in my area
