You wont ever hit the motor max unless your battery current is 80A

Well my v3 system with 12s2p 35E and 40A battery / 125A phase, 6384 120kv and same prop works very nicely.

Also on 1p 21700, >50A is optimistic
So if more phase amps does not fix it, I will change the motor to 6384 120kv

Test in a few hours

Went much better but still some cutouts under full power.

Got 27 start + 2 failed attempts, much better than anticipated.

That is with zero motoring, just start then pump 15->90 seconds

Conditions were ideal with flat water and no wind.

super Impressive design work! 8.8kg all up is mega!
maytech was renowned for weak power and poor waterproofing… until the 6579 came along which has plenty of power for full efoil IME (1.1kg)
but why not just go with the proven most efficient motor from SAITE? 6374 or 84
I have found the FD 3 blade alu prop to have the thinnest blades and be the most efficient on runtime.

@Jezza I don’t agree on that. Did you measure yourself?
I checked my Flipsky Waterproof 6374 and Generic 6384 today.

  1. Generic 6384 is actually only 81mm long making the Flipsky 6374 only 7 mm shorter.

  2. Stator stack length is 51mm for the generic *84 and only 45mm for Flipsky *74. Same length goes for each motors magnets.



  3. Weight - my DIY waterproofed *84 is even lighter than Flipsky *74


So I will go back to the cheap generic motor. Maybe even without waterproofing as the 2k Epoxy coat did not stick as good as I hoped. Only downside is the anoying laser marking which gives the ideal start for rust on the rotors.

We are mostly talking about the maytech 6374 here I think, That is much shorter than other 6374, I had made measurements.

edit, here is the post, the maytech 6374 is actually only 40mm stator!

You can also use normal epoxy, that is what I used for my Saite 63100. For the bell I added thickener and glass balloons to fill the gaps between the magnets. I use it for an efoil upto 4500W, It does not overheat. It is 5Y old, mainly used in fresh water, recoated and changed bearings twice.
Nice calliper, I have one of those too, bought in 1986, still very accurate and no batteries to change.

Setup is working, few notable issues :

  • 6374 maytech has to go, I give up. Now waiting for the 6384 and preparing a carbon prop based on fd type blade and mold made by a fellow DIYer.
  • some water gets into the xt90, I don’t know where it is coming Tru. Balance pogo seems dry. Temporary fix is silicon grease.
  • still waiting on the spare maytech rx and vesc express to get full system features (telemetry and BT)

Should be my 4th battery on the v4 system, here with the 1050 foil after wind had died while trying to get the new pansh 4m parawing out

I’ve made heaps of different foil assist setups using Saite 6374 and 6384 130kv, Flipsky 6374 and Aliexpress 6384 120kv. 8S, 10S and 12S

Totally non scientific but my preference is the Saite 6374, has similar or maybe even more grunt than Ali 6384. Not as heavy as the Flipsky 6374, which has crazy solid thick end caps.

10S 6374 130kv Saite will get even heavy beginners up on foil on large wing board with mid mast motor mount and twin blade genuine Foil Drive props.

12S it’s a beast!

Saite make the foil drive motors and will sell (at least they used to) a waterproofed 6374 and 6384 with ceramic bearings. Chris Kwong is the contact sales4@saite-motor.com. You can also buy unwaterproofed motors from them on Alibaba.

I tried to get a FD 6384 from them and they told me to go to Foil Drive.

If I just asked for a waterproof 6384 maybe they would have done it.

In fairness to them, I did want the exact motor so all the cables and pod matches, so in my email I specified the FD model. I’ve had nothing but bad luck since starting foiling a year ago with everything including failed builds, so the insane amount I paid for a used FD HP motor was probably worth it.

Your comment on the 6374 being better is interesting. Having used both I have too many variables with 80 amp on the 6384 and only 70 on the 6374 to really judge.

Being new, it has just been a massive improvement starting with the 8s 60 amp standard Assist Plus to now the 14s 80 amp 6384, which just bites the water no matter what.

I did try a few ones in carbon but the efficiency was lower than the nice aluminium ones. What were your thoughts on your carbon ones?

Saite will make custom motors for anyone, but you need to submit a design and it will cost a few thousand to get a prototype similar to FD HP with rhe plug etc. Theres an obvious reason for it. Its also good that they honour their commercial agreements.
For a normal saite waterproof its around $120 or so. They will happily give you a generic with a long cable.

My carbon blades only lasted two sessions last year due to the hub failing in cold water. Then I went alu print and those have been great.

I did not have motivation to go forged blades again since then, but a fellow DIYer shared the STL for a replica FD blade, and I also found a hub for FD blades by another user. Based on a fd style blade, my friend designed a 3 piece mold that I will try soon.

I had made two blades based on FD scan as a test in a resin mold I made, but they were not compressed and precise enough to go much further.

Which XT90 are you using?

Xt90S, I had too much sparking on waterproof xt90.

I had some grease in the connector during potting and I think I may have a channel of grease instead of epoxy to the top of battery.

That or my sealing concept is not working as I would like, maybe the alu part has too much granularity on the surface.

Also received the new vesc express and maytech rx today, after a bit of open heart surgery the system is back to fully featured state.

I like that status led are visible thru the gel and cover, but ideally those would also be visible with the foil mounted for quick troubleshoot in situ.

Forged blades here we go again :





Weight after initial sanding 9.6, 10.1, 10.4 gr

Some surface imperfections, and the fiber did not fully form around the screw hole, making a weak point in the part at the worst place.

I think that is more a problem of process than mold. I should have taken even more care into pushing the fibers around the 4mm rod during fiber loading.

Leave the rod out and 3D print a drill jig. That way you will get a perfect section to drill.
