Placing foil-assist box on the body

Hi, man thank you fro sharing. Being on the hunt for the coil cable for a while now, is it possible to know how many A you run on average and during the bursts and if the cable behaves well enough?

I’ve measured original FD2 with 11S3P uses 25A on average and 40-45A during takes offs, which puts 2.5mm2 sections to the limit (on the paper) making it not an easy choice to make

Hello,

I’m always set to 50 amp battery side, I don’t know motor side (X Cross 160 amp ESC)

I took 3G2.5 since the beginning on my foil assists projects like FD. It’s within the limits of the wires but, it’s only on short burst and in water environment so colder than if it’s was dry.

Has anyone noticed a significant drop in power when moving to the back pack?
I’ve added nearly 1 m of wire to my old assist system, a new motor and a cable joint.
With the box mounted on the deck I could easily efoil on with a 10s 2p battery, while this is not the aim, the new system is just about reaching the speed to start engaging the foil.
I can eliminate the joint by connecting my old system back up and testing, if its not the joint I’ll be a bit stuck.
The esc gets warm but not hot in the back pack as does the joiner, but I’m not sure thats not because of the heat caused by the esc?

What kind of cable do you have? 3x2,5?
With 10S you should take a 3x4. The small cable cross-section creates a heat problem with the current. This leads to a high voltage drop across the cable. This results in less power being delivered to the motor.
I’m using a 3x2.5 at 12s. This also gets a bit warm, but I haven’t noticed any loss of power from the motor.

Hi, @Etiennebzh do you still run this cable on your coil setup, does it overheat?

I’ve tried recently LAPP Spiral 2.5mm version, however running 25-30A in just 30s the temperature raised to 80C+

I’ve ordered this one this week waiting for it to arrive :crossed_fingers:

On their official website it seems like they also offer 4G4mm2, buts its super thick ~15mm in OD

This seems odd.
How do you test this? Are you talking battery or phase current?

And how long is your cable?

There is no way it should get that hot with 25A motor current.

Hello, the 3G2.5 is already a bit heavy. It’s ok but I wouldn’t go heavier.

I haven’t used my FA since a while now. I prefer tow boogie where I live.

Makes sense, I think eventually most of the DIY builders will end up with the tow boogie. Currently I live in the area where have decent down-winds from time to time and good train connection to come home so assist solution has different use cases

Still curios if you have actually used this setup and how did the cable perform?

I haven’t found many feedbacks so far on the forum so everything seems like price of gold at this moment

I had my first outing on my backpack mount yesterday. It went better than I was expecting. I need to do a whole load more tests in a variety of conditions but you can see a clip here and I’ve written some ramblings in the video description of my findings compared to my other builds.

Great build congrats! What cable are using in this build, is it lapp 400p?

Thanks. Yes - the 400p cable. I coiled the top part myself with a hot air blower and a wooden pole.

Thank you for sharing will give it a try next week (once it arrives)

Using the same belt as you for quite many years, great product I am not quite sure what are you using as a main leash.

My plan is to use Leashes - Foil Leash Lite - Manera - EN (90cm version that stretches to 150cm, I’ve removed the shock cord from the strap) hopefully wrap the rest into neoprene sleeve.

That leash looks good. A friend made mine. It’s just some strong dyneema with elastic added. It stretches to 5ft.

That’s great, I think then they are very similar, the Manera one is dyneema shock cord I tried to find something online but most commercial products are longer, I guess your friend might be into sailing and people there often know how to weave their own cords

How long did you blow btw, did you use commercial one at specific temp or the just. hair dryer?

Nothing special. Just a small hot air blower for arts and crafts. Nothing commercial. I did it 3 times overall as each of the previous attempts wasn’t enough.

I used it one time in the waves and one time on flat for maiden ride.

It ran perfectly, like my strait cable, even when trigger pushed to the max. Taking in consideration my BLheli is always set to 50amp max battery side.

Cheers

Ty man, will keep trying :crossed_fingers:

Do you have a picture of the connector from the backside? How are cables and connected put in place?
