Source's build log

With out my watercooling pump turned on I hit 80deg after an hour or so and with my watercooling back on it sits around 44deg ± 4 deg or so most of the time. when towing someone on a surfboard at full speed it was 50 - 55deg when I was periodically looking at the temps. Hope this helps

getting better at the air chair lol

So far no major problems on this board over 100 hours of playtime with only 1 cooling pump failure due to getting blocked up and a small dent in the deck from a hard bail, hopefully she keeps on chugging for many more hours :crossed_fingers:

Going to be starting another build next year for the Mrs.

So my trampa shit the bed today unsure why. Was out yesterday and everything was fine. Went out today and the motor sound was off its normal sounding pitch so I turned it over to check on the prop and it was fine so I just thought it had some sand in the thrust bearing or something 5 mins later it cut off, thought I may have covered the receiver or something but it promptly came back online for another 10 mins then pop and the old burnt electrical smell. Paddled back to the beach opened it up and it had black mark on the side of the aluminum box that has the trampa vesc in it, it had poped the waterproof gasket out, Open that up and well this lol. No water in the hatch and it been working fine for 100s of hours untill now :man_shrugging:[Processing:

Are you sure that there was no water ingress? I burnt two Flier ESCs and one VESC so far, the reason has always been water ingress. It only takes some drops of saltwater.

Yep I’m confident that no water was in there.
The hatch was water tight and if water did get into the compartment the vesc is in a aluminum waterproof enclosure with a few squirts of corrosion x for good measure lol. I didnt see any water when I opened up the box. condensation in the box maybe? I tested it under water with the hatch open way back when I first build it - put tissue paper in all the compartments and was dry

I’ve seen an interesting failure mode in the esk8 forums where the phase wires short onto the aluminium case. Any chance that could have happened, where the wires exit the housing?

Intesting, that was my first thought also. It looks like where the fault happend with the black marks on the back of the enclosure like a direct short to the case of the vesc blowing out the power side of the vesc. Maybe all the vibrations loosened up a solder joint and it touched the case. I really hate solder, I bolt and crimp everything lol.

When the aluminium housing is machined with a tidy looking entry point for the wiring, and the opening tolerances are small, with square edges, there’s a risk that the insulation could wear/move/soften and cause a short. I filed the openings larger on my maker-x foc plus when building my foil assist to try and prevent this from occurring.

That’s a good idea! Will do that this time with the new vesc hopefully no more bang bang :crossed_fingers:

Friends! Fill everything with a compound for electronics, under the very lid! And there will be no problems!

After doing a load of reading i still cant really figure out why my vesc died. The only think i can think of is the length of my battery cables about 60cm of 4awg to the vesc.I saw Ted from trampa said 50 cm would be ok on the VESC forums but :man_shrugging: What do you guys think?

I see that you have a extra Antispark plug. Would this switch on the Trampa VESC also work as antispark switch / plug?

No, that is a low voltage power switch. You will still spark if there isn’t an antispark switch in-line with the power.

Ohh thank you, but the blue seas Circuit Breakers would work as anti spark switch?

Would not recommend using the circuit breaker as a anti spark switch as it will still spark when the contacts touch inside the breaker.

Gave the board a new deck pad and some latches
