Foil Drive Assist, DIY

Thanks, it looks like you removed factory both heat sinks but then put one back on the non-branded side. I’ll follow your suggestion it makes sense to use a flat surface as the internal/external interface.

by the way, I just DYE my propeller’s hub.

Thanks @Jezza, any suggestions on an ESC that wont overheat as easily?

get an HV3 Flycolor 160A

@okp Cheers. Would i still need to mount through the box and re-water proof + apply thermal paste as per above with a 160A unit? Wont be using as an e-foil just an assist so i imagine pretty short burst of high current.

yes, you always want to have an ESC cooled

wish them all the success.

What is the purpose of DYE ? rigidity ? color and aspect ?

Which product do you use ?

changing the color of my grey hub to any other color. It’s RIT DYE for Nylon so perfect use (and easy/cheap). Check the video, the product is visible

@okp thanks for the information about cooling the HV3 while keeping the original heatsink. Could you please tell me which kind of thermal paste to use between HV3 heatsink and alu plate. I suppose it must be very sticky not to separate. Also concerning the alu plate, how thick should it be ?

I use sikaflex F11C on some surroundings to secure the controller against the alu heatsink (of the box). You can go 3/4mm thickness. They are cheap on Amazon

That is a game changer price.
$2200 (with the reserve discount) instead of $5300 for foil drive max.

Edit… My maths was very badly out there

It looks like it’s 12s2p and 12s4p for efoil.

My only issue is the extra voltage will be negated by the initial drag as the housing is almost double the frontal area.

Hey all, firstly thanks for all your help and suggestions along the way. Couldn’t have done it without you.

I’m after a few options and keen to hear your ideas on the following.
For those running an ESC, how are you monitoring voltage/current (power) and temperature?
I’m interested in real time analysis but happy to log and review also.
Currently running:
6384 120kv
12S3P 18650 (interested in trying 6S6P config) (no BMS balance charge only with icharger)
Flycolor 150A ESC
Standard maytech remote/receiver
FD mast/motor mount and hub/prop
I see there are a few possibilities with:

  1. Infinity logger
  2. Arduino hall current sensor
  3. Smart shunt etc

Just keen to hear what works

Thanks again

I haven’t used the flycolors but they are blheli32 esc’s, and these have telemetry already onboard, right? Maybe someone here more knowledgeable in these can chime in.

Yes, I’m adding a FC for fun to benefit from accelerometer, gyro, barometer etc… a drone with one prop pushing water and the blackbox log.

Not sure i understand, is FC=flightcontroller?

Anyone know if the name brand assist prop hub fits on the 6384 120kv from china/eBay?

I have an alien power motor which I believe is just a rebranded saite motor that foil drive use. The 4 hole spacing is identical to the cheap bduav 6384 motor we get from AliExpress. I think they are compatible but cannot say 100%.
