It’s a fiddle but comes up ok with some patience
That could dissipate the heat from the sun ![]()
@JonathanC
All my builds are full of regrets.
I put my heatsink at the back because I was following a copy of a previous build blindly, and mid build I realised, but of course I cut the cable to the motor too short for the front, and the ESC was too big for the side. I could have extended the motor cable, but was over all the self created bad luck.
Based on logging it still runs cool, but I haven’t done a really hot day yet.
Your heatsink looks great and in the perfect spot.
I use both straps and locking tape to secure my two boxes, yes there are two battery boxes, and I hit a mud bank real fast once and the straps stopped the boxes from flying off the board.
Hey ZedMan, don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s a bit of a journey! I’ve done a lot of builds for myself and friends, at least 20 so had some practice. Esc’s, vesc’s 6S, 8S, 10 and 12S, pick up little improvements and skills along the way. Being with a group of buddies all on systems I’ve made is a pretty amazing experience. Keep at it and enjoy the ride ![]()
After seeing this thread, I am convinced to build a backpack foil assist as yours.
I am pretty decent in DIY foil related projects, but this is the first time attempting a foil assist.
Do I understand correctly that you prefer the saite 6374 motor and you use foil drive prop?
What BEC have you used and what is the battery setup?
Thank you for all the information, but I really liked the apparent simplicity of you setup ![]()
Hi, the bec is a Matek Pro 12S.
My favourite motor balancing cost and performance is actually the cheap 6384 from Aliexpress. Cost aside the Saite motors are really good.
I’ve done quite a few XCross 160 esc setups but the Flipsky 75100 is also a great option if you are comfortable programming the VESC. Seems that much over about 2000W seems to cause the XCross to cut out, pretty much regardless of settings.
I have designed a couple of hubs for different motors that I use with twin blade genuine Foil Drive props.
Thank you for the reply!
So I understand I could theoretically easily reach over 2000W with the setup I am considering. Is then the x-cross 160 a limiting factor? I am trying to decide on Esc before ordering ![]()
Trying to do similar… did you glue (heatsink paste) the large heatsink to the ESC heatsink or did you cut the original ESC heatsink off (and glue directly to the MOSFETs)?
I will try without the aluminium channel.
Have you waterproofed the ESC and RX (conformal coating or CorrosionX)?
Thanks again
Yes, in my opinion the XCross is a limiting factor. I’m light, 66kg and can use my XCross with any foil no problem. My friend who is 90ish on a wider wing board experience cut out which may be over-current, very consistently.
I’ve made XCross setups for friends and they have worked well but none of those guys are over 80kg.
Flipsky 75100 VESC works really well even with big guys efoiling but requires more complex programming. Happy to help with a file for programming if you want to go that way.
As far as mounting the XCross, I leave them in the original case and mount that to the heatsink. Seems like it’s super easy to pull off surface mount components trying to get the XCross out of its case.
The Flipsky is easy to pull apart, the regular 75100 on aluminum pcb fits into the smaller box. 75100 Pro is larger, not 100% sure if it will fit in the small CamdenBoss case.
The aluminium channel connects both sides of the XCross housing to the external heatsink, I cut it so that it fits perfectly, inside face of channel touching one side and heatsink the other side. If you use a C channel both side of the C touch the heatsink. Keeping the XCross cool is super critical imo.
I fill the channel containing XCross with two part silicone after heatsink and channel are all fixed in place. Totally sealed
Thanks again.
I am just under 80 myself, but with thick wetsuit snd all that, it starts adding.
I think I will go for 75100 then. I will scroll through the forum for builds with that, but I migt come with some questions ![]()
As I mentioned, happy to give you a file for full programming. My friend is a VESC ‘gun’ and came up with a great setup we have been using.
I looked at the 75100 - very big and looking at the camden box and my battery pack (8x3 - actually 2 x 4x3), I cant see how this would fit… but I did find, and have now ordered a Flipsky Mini FSESC6.8 (60V 100A) VESC which is significantly smaller and looks ideal. Would your VESC settings work on this? If so can I please get a copy from you?
Thanks.
It does fit, you have to take it out of the aluminium case. Actually fits more easily than XCross
Yep, settings will work I’ll get the file to you.
